Amu urges for global efforts to help develop green industry

Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu urged the word leaders for extending their coordinated efforts to help develop green industries for sustainable development, reports BSS. “Two thirds of the world’s population will live in the urban areas by 2050”, the minister said, noting that an effective initiatives for transferring green technology is urgent for meeting the need for green industries of the huge urban population. The minister was participating in the panel discussion on “Green Industry for Sustainable Cities” at the fourth Green Industry Conference (GIC) in Ulsan, Korea, said a release received here Tuesday. Referring to the government’s plan for making Bangladesh an industrially developed country by 2021, Amu said Bangladesh had already taken various initiatives for developing green industries. He listed renewable energy projects, cleaner production system and green cell in the country’s industry sector as the major steps toward green industries. The minister said, “If we want a sustainable and economically viable future, we need to ensure our industry does not harm the environment.” The three-day conference is organised by the Ulsan Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and UNIDO, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. The conference will explore the interdependence between industry and cities in the context of resource efficiency, green technology and eco-innovation. A special feature of the GIC will be field visits to state-of-the-art manufacturing sites in the city of Ulsan, the industrial powerhouse of Korea and a model for eco-industrial parks. Around 300 participants including high-level government officials, representatives of the private sector, industry associations, academia and civil society are expected to take part in the event.
