RMG workers say labour law is regularly violated at workplaces

Workers from at least five factories and three labour organizations participated in the workshop A number of workers from different ready-made garment (RMG) factories on Friday claimed that that they still had to face various irregularities and gross violations of labour law at their workplaces, even though the law came into effect in 2006.They made the claim during a daylong workshop for garment workers organized by Bangladesh Shrama Institute (Bashi) in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur, according to a press release.Workers from at least five factories and three labour organizations participated in the workshop, which was held in co-operation with Aid Foundation.The RMG workers alleged that many employers had not been providing appointment letters and service books.They also claimed that workers lost their jobs if they expressed the intention to form unions.Bashi Executive Committee Convener Priscila Raj presided over the inauguration session that was addressed by labour leader Shahidul Islam Sabuj, Aid foundation Administration Coordinator Rabiul Alam and German photographer Sibylle Hofter, among others.
