Cotton cultivation is gaining ground here as well as in Panchagarh District due to its less cultivation cost and high profit.According to the data of Cotton Development Board (CDB), Thakurgaon Zone, the board has fixed cultivation target of cotton on 1,400 hectares of land in Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts this season.Meanwhile, cotton was cultivated on 600 hectares of land in 13 units of Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts. Transplantation of cotton seedlings is still going on. The officials of the Board hoped that the target would be fulfilled.The officials further said to cultivate hybrid, CB-12 and CB-14 varieties of cotton on one bigha (0.33 decimal) of land would cost Tk 8,000 to 10,000. But, after harvesting, the farmers would achieve net profit of Tk 12,000 to 15,000. Around 160 to 170 days are needed for its total cultivation.Deputy Director of CDB, Rangpur Region, Md. Nasiruddin said the soil and the weather of Thakurgaon and Panchagarh districts are suitable for cotton cultivation, and for this reason, cotton cultivation is increasing in these districts.He further said that Cotton Development Board is providing loan and necessary suggestions to the farmers in this connection.
