The Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA) has thanked Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa for including textile related issues in a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said it was confident that the issues would be resolved soon. Jayalalithaa’s memorandum to the PM last week highlighted textile related issues such as the release of 13th Finance Commission grant an amount of Rs 200 crores for completion of 18 Common Effluent Treatment Plants in Tirupur to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge and TUFS subsidy pending claims. In a press release, TEA president Dr A Sakthivel said he has sent a letter of thanks to Jayalalithaa for inclusion of textile related issues in her memorandum . In his letter, Dr Sakthvel said the immediate measures taken by the chief minister after assuming power have helped exports from Tirupur reach Rs 20,730 crores in 2014-15 and TEA is on track to double the exports in next two years. He pointed out that the textile industry in Tamil Nadu was contributing 11 per cent of total exports and was one of the largest employment provider next to agriculture. In the case of garment sector, more than 70 per cent of employment is provided mainly to women workers hailing from rural areas. Dr Sakthivel thanked Jayalithaa for seeking the PM’s intervention for the release of 13thFinance Commission grant an amount of Rs 200 crores for completion of 18 Common Effluent Treatment Plants in Tiruppur to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge and make them fully functional. He said the Common Effluent Treatment Plants have still not been fully upgraded to ensure Zero Liquid Discharge due to lack of financial assistance and most of them are operating between 30 to 70 per cent of installed capacity. He also appreciated Jayalalithaa’s request to the PM to expedite the release of the pending subsidy under the TUF Scheme which would be help the units to meet out their financial commitments and also facilitate better production planning and control.
