A readymade garment factory in Joydevpur upazila here was closed for indefinite period yesterday in the face of prolonged worker unrest. Sources at Keya Knit Composite Ltd situated in Konabari area of the upazila said the factory authorities had issued show-cause notices to some 50-60 workers about one and half months ago on charge of violation of its rules. Besides, they formed a seven-member committee to probe the allegation. However, the workers paid no heed to the notice despite repeated call from the committee and they started forcing the general staff to stop the work. Finally, the unruly workers some days ago beat up some workers for denying their appeal. When contacted, the factory’s Managing Director Abdul Khaleque Pathan said they had information of running massive vandalism in the factory in the name of protest and they have been compelled to take the decision to shun possible danger. On the contrary, some protesting workers claimed that their protest was against illogical notice of the authorities. Joydevpur’s Konabari police outpost Sub-Inspector Mobarak Hossain said the notice infuriated some workers of the unit and they were on protest some days ago seeking cancellation of it.
