US ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat on Friday said there had been significant progress in Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector’s capacity building over the last two and half years but some more tasks needed to be done. ‘Specially, there has been much progress in terms of workers’ safety, but more have to be done,’ she said while addressing a function in the Signboard area of Gazipur arranged by East West Industrial Park. The US diplomat said her country and the international community were witnessing that workers rights were respected in Bangladesh and they were allowed to assemble together. The international buyers know how a worker is working and the efforts will be successful once owners and workers will work jointly, Bernicat said. ‘Change is never an easy job,’ she said. East West Industrial Park managing director M Harun-ur-Rashid, BGMEA director Mahmud Hasan Khan Babul and Solidarity Centre director also spoke on the occasion. As many as 113 talented students were given stipend at the function.
