Garment labour leaders on Friday at a rally in front of National Press Club in the capital called on the Awami League-led government and the factory owners to take steps to reopen the Swan garments. Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre president Mantu Ghosh said that the owners of Swan garments had closed their two factories unlawfully. More than 300 workers lost their jobs and deprived from wages for more than six months, he said. Kazi Ruhul Amin, general secretary of the GWTUC, said that the government was committed to pay the dues of the workers, but now the government was trying to avoid that. The GWTUC would announce tougher movement programmes if the factories were not opened immediately, he added. Chaired by Mantu Ghosh, the rally was addressed, among others, by leaders of the organisation, Joly Talukder, MA Shahin, Manzur Moin, KM Mintu and Morsheda Akhter. The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.
