Some 550 acres of land will be prepared for setting up industrial units and factories in the economic zone at Mirsarai upazila in the district by next two years. Communication, infrastructure and other development activities have already started there after completion of feasibility study. Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) Executive Chairman Paban Chowdhury disclosed these at a programme held on the occasion of investment promotion road show styled ‘Development of Economic Zones in Bangladesh’ at Mezban Hall of Radisson Blue Chittagong Bay View in the city on Sunday. Addressing the programme, Paban Chowdhury said BEZA will also develop 500 acres of land for setting up special garment park at Mirsarai. Land acquisition for this will be completed within a year. BEZA is working for assisting investors in private sector, removing investment barriers and enhancing economic capability of the country abroad, he said. The BEZA executive chairman said BEZA has kept works continued to develop 100 economic zones across the country and create employment for 10 million people by next 15 years. The authority also has plan for setting corridors in Dhaka-Teknaf, Dhaka-Sylhet, Dhaka-Mongla and Dhaka-Panchagarh routes for the economic zones. Fifty percent of these zones would be in Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar. There are around 27000 acres of land at Mirsarai in Chittagong and Feni. Some 20 to 30 economic zones can be developed only at Mirsarai, said Paban Chowdhury. Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the road show as the chief guest, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam said activities of economic zones will make the economic road of the country smoother in the way of turning Bangladesh into a middle income country and achieving vision 2021.
