Several hundred workers of an export-oriented readymade garments factory locked in a clash with police in Bholail area of Sadar upazila as the law enforcers obstructed their demonstration programme. Sources said workers of the garments factory of NR Group took to the streets on the Dhaka-Munshiganj road and staged a demonstration there to press home their demand. They put up barricade disrupting vehicular movement for an hour from 8am to 9am. Informed, police rushed to the spot and charged baton to disperse the demonstrating workers to ease public sufferings. A clash ensued between police and the workers as the workers occupied the road and tried to vandalise vehicles. The workers alleged that they had been demanding that the authorities give them salaries on production basis but the authorities gave them the same on monthly basis. The aggrieved workers took to the streets as they after coming to their workplace found layoff notice at the factory without prior indication. Fatullah Model Police Station officer-in-charge Md. Asaduzzaman said that the workers tried to vandalise vehicles on the road and police took actions through charging baton on the demonstrators.
