Several hundred workers of a readymade garment factory at Zamgora in Ashulia observed work-stoppage on Sunday for the second consecutive day to press for realizing their six-point demands including yearly 15 per cent increment and payment of monthly salary within seven working days of the month. Their demands also included earn leave benefits, maternity leave and re-employment of the sacked workers. Workers said they have been demonstrating for their five-point demands for two weeks while on last Wednesday the management told them to submit a written application. The management wanted to inform their decision to the workers on Saturday but they did not. The workers observed work stoppage for the day and went back without any decision. On Sunday, the workers again went to the factory gate but the management did not allow six workers to enter the factory. The workers were quality inspectors Md. Inzamul Haque, Md. Moniruzzaman, Md. Rezaul and ironman Md. Nazrul Islam, sweing operator Rabiul Islam and packing man Imran Hossain. The workers expressed their apprehension that they might be terminated for leading the agitation. Assistant superintendent of Ashulia industrial police, Md. Musfiqur Rahim, said the workers and the management were negotiating but they were yet to reach any understanding. ‘Additional policemen have been deployed in the factory area to avoid any untoward incident,’ he said. The factory management were not available for their comments.
