A barber (hair-dresser) poured boiling water on the body of a female garment worker, leaving her critically injured after he raped her overnight at Madhkhola village under Sripur upazila, Gazipur yesterday. Sources said Shabuddin, 50, the barber, and his cohorts picked the female worker, 25, form her home forcefully at night and confined in a house. Shabuddin raped her during the night and his associates guarded the house. In the morning, a woman of the village informed the incident to the father of the worker. The father of the victim is a rickshaw-puller. Later, the father of the victim went to the spot to rescue with locals. Sensing the presence of them, Shabuddin poured boiling water on the body of the worker, leaving her critically injured. At first she was admitted to Sripur Upazila Health Complex. Later she was sent to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. A case was filed accusing the rapist Shabuddin and his cohorts Makbul Hossain, Nuru Mian and Bablur Rahman. Mohammad Ali Zinnah, officer-in-charge of Sripur police station, said police arrested the cohorts of the rapist. The law enforcers also tried to arrest Shabuddin, he said.
