Workers’ leaders at a seminar on Monday called for raising the prices of ready-made garment (RMG) products for ensuing fair wage for garment workers. They also alleged that foreign buyers and sellers get the lion’s share of profits from RMG products. Only 27 per cent of the total profit is enjoyed by Bangladeshi manufacturers and exporters, although they have to take most of the responsibilities in this sector, they mentioned. The demand and allegation were made at the seminar titled ‘Workers’ Rights in Global Supply Chain: Focus RMG Sector of Bangladesh’ organised by Textile Garments Workers Federation at Dhaka Reporters Unity. Chaired by federation president Abul Hossain, the seminar was also attended by Sanjib Pandit, Omena George, Topan Shaha and other workers’ union leaders. In his speech, Abul Hossain said on the one hand, foreign buyers always press local garment owners over the violation of workers rights on the other hand they don’t want to raise the prices of RMG products. He urged all the RMG workers to get united for raising the prices of garments products.
