At least 15 persons, including eight police personnel, were injured in a clash between the readymade garment workers and police in Chittagong city’s Bayezid area yesterday morning. Police said around 300 workers of ‘Chowdhury Apparels’ took to the street protesting removal of its two supervisors from the factory around 8:30am and staged demonstration by halting the traffic movement. “Being informed, a team of police from Bayezid police station and industrial police rushed to the spot and tried to bring the situation under control”, said Officer-in-Charge of Bayezid police station Mohammed Mohsin. The OC said then the demonstrating workers started hurling brick chips targeting police, leaving eight policemen, including the OC, injured. Police fired four tear canisters to disperse the agitating workers. Later, the clashing workers took shelter inside the factory following the police action, said the OC, adding that now the situation was under control. “The factory owners sacked two supervisors of the factory, triggering the discontent of the workers”, said the OC. After the clash, traffic movements on both sides of the road remained halted for one and half an hour, said police sources. CMCH Police Outpost’s Nayek Hamidur Rahman said around 10 persons were given primary treatment at the hospital while a constable was admitted to the hospital.
