A fire broke out at a ready-made garment factory in Chandra Palli Bidyut area of Kaliakoir upazila in Gazipur early Saturday, causing a considerable damage. The fire-service said the five-storey factory building of ‘Tropical Knitex’ at Kaliyakoir got engulfed in fire around 12:45am. Kaliyakoir fire-service’s Station Officer Apurba Bol said that the fire started from the second-floor and spread to the other floors instantly. “A huge quantity of yarn and fabrics stored in the factory were completely gutted.” As many as 13 units from the fire-service headquarters at Dhaka’s Mirpur, Savar, Gazipur’s Joydebpur, Tangail’s Mirzapur rushed to the spot to extinguish the blaze. Fire Service Inspector Ardesh Ali, now at the spot, said that the flames are yet to be controlled. “It seems we will need a few more hours to put out the fire completely.” He said they are yet to assess the damage and that an electrical short circuit may have caused the fire. Machinery, threads, cloths and other valuables were damaged in the fire, the station officer added. It could not be ascertained yet what caused the fire, Apurba said.
