Youth unemployment rates in Bangladesh are expected to decline this year though the global rate for jobless young population is on the rise, according to the latest report of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), reports BSS. The World Employment and Social Outlook 2016, released Thursday in Geneva, does not mention the current rate of youth unemployment in Bangladesh, but said that the rate is slightly above the average rate for the Southeast Asia, which was 10.91 per cent last year. According to ILO, the share of unemployed youth in the region should remain stable at 10.9 per cent in 2016 and 2017. Consequently, the total number of unemployed youths – representing nearly 20 per cent of unemployed youths worldwide – will remain just below 14 million (1.4 crore). The youth unemployment rate in the region’s largest economy, India, is expected to remain slightly below the regional average in 2016, the report said. The outlook, however, shows the global number of unemployed youths is set to rise by half a million (Five lakh) this year to reach 71 million (7.1 crore) – the first such increase in three years, which is nearly 2.0 per cent up over last year. The report forecasts that the worldwide unemployment rate would be 13.1 per cent at the end of this year, which would remain at this level next year too. The report pointed out that the major concern is the share and number of young people, often in emerging and developing countries, who live in extreme or moderate poverty despite having a job. “In fact, 156 million (15.60 crore) or 37.7 per cent of working youth are in extreme or moderate poverty compared to 26 per cent of working adults” the report said.
