Buyers of BGMEA Building spaces said Wednesday that they were anxious to know what would happen to their investments. Buyers of BGMEA Building spaces said Wednesday that they were anxious to know what would happen to their investments. Demolition of the BGMEA Building would throw them into uncertainties, they told New Age. Most of them said that they were thinking to shift their business offices elsewhere. ‘Since we are members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association we would hold our patience and wait to see what decision it takes,’ they said. All the 40 space buyers own apparel factories, two of them bought spaces for their banks. None of them could get their spaces registered as the BGMEA does not own the land on which its building stands. BGMEA leaders, however, said that they would seek review of the Appellate Division verdict that ordered demolishing of the BGMEA building complex. After the apex court gives its decision in the review petition, they said BGMEA would take decision with regard to the space buyers. Out of 2.66 lakh square feet of floor space in the 15-storey building BGMEA sold 1.25 lakh square feet of floor space. The space buyers include Dhaka Bank Ltd, Exim Bank Bangladesh Ltd and 38 apparel manufacturing companies. Flamingo Fashions Ltd and Jinnat Apparels Ltd, both DBL group companies, among the country’s largest apparel manufacturers, bought the 12th and the 13th floors with 28,000 square feet of floor space. ‘Possibly we have to shift our offices,’ said DBL Group vice chairman Mohammed Abdur Rahim. Rahim also a BGMEA director, said that since the court verdict spelt out what has to be done for the space buyers thee was no need for him to say anything on the issue. Blazar Apparels Ltd chairman Zakir Hossain, who bought space on the fifth floor, said he felt disappointed about his investment. Rupa Fashions Ltd managing director Shahidul Islam said that he would expect BGMEA to find a solution. ‘We would file a review petition and after getting the decision we would sit with the space buyers, said BGMEA president Siddiqur Rahman. He hoped that the space buyers being BGMEA members would not lose their patience.
