Worker-owner relationship in RMG sector lacks trust

State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu on Sunday said that lack of trust is prevailing between employers and workers triggering forming new types of trade union in the country’s RMG sector.“If the workers get the opportunity to share their views with the top officials, it would be much effective than any other social dialogue,” said the state minister.Mujibul Haque Chunnu also said, around 90 percent registered trade unions are dysfunctional and if the government takes any action, they will be compelled to close.“Many people make chaos claiming that there is no trade union in our country. But, I want to give you the information that, there are 7,750 registered trade unions and several hundred of labour federations in the country. When try to reach them, I found 90 percent of them as dysfunctional and most of them are backboneless,” Chunnu added.Chunnu made the remarks as the chief guest launching a new programme titled, “Promoting Social Dialogue and Harmonious Industrial Relations in the Bangladesh Ready-Made Garment Industry Project”, by the government of Bangladesh in assistance with International Labour Organisation (ILO) on Sunday. The project was launched aiming to improve workplace in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh by enhancing dialogue between the government, employers and workers. The state minister also urged the entrepreneurs to follow the rule of ‘distributing five percent of net profit among the employees’.
