Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) and Bangladesh Cotton Association (BCA) will jointly organise a two-day event titled “Global Cotton Summit 2017” will be held at Radisson Blu Water Garden Hotel in the city tomorrow (Friday).The event will be held for the third times aiming to showcase cotton where buyers and sellers from home and abroad will get opportunity to share their views, said BTMA Vice-President Mohammad Ali Khokan at a press conference at BTMA office yesterday.He said that Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali is expected to inaugurate the summit as the chief guest, while traders, shippers and merchants from Bangladesh, India, Sudan, United Kingdom, Singapore, Switzerland, Mali, Burkina Faso, Chad, Turkey, Iran, the United States to participate at the summit.Khokan said, “Such a mega event will help the country to achieve the $50 billion export target by 2021, as cotton is a vital raw material for garment items. The summit will also narrow the communication gap between international cotton sellers and Bangladeshi buyers.”He hoped that the summit would also help to ensure the uninterrupted sourcing of cotton to continue the production of textile sector.“Now Bangladesh has 430 spinning mills which have 11.50 million spindle capacities as cotton import amount witnessed over 100 percent growth, while it has been increased to 6.1 million bales in 2016 from three million bales in 2005,” Khokan added.BCA General Secretary Mehedi Ali, BCA Joint Secretary Matin Sarker, BTMA Director Mosharraf Hossain and Elias Siraji were present at the press conference.
