A USAID delegation on Tuesday suggested that Bangladesh should form a platform for ensuring welfare of the workers like the apex body of the garments sector Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers’ and Exporter’s Association (BGMEA).
The delegation members David Tulloch and Marc Cassidy conveyed the message to the parliamentary standing committee on the labour and employment ministry.
Committee chairman Begum Monnujan Sufian and other members including Israfil Alam, Anwarul Abedin Khan, Chhobi Biswash, Ruhul Amin and Roksana Yasmin were present at the call on meeting.
The delegation members discussed various issues of the labour law, owner and worker relation and the current situation in the RMG industry.
They also suggested that a separate garments zone be set up to continue the ever flourishing RMG sector of the country.
They noted that Bangladesh needs to strengthen the tie between the owners and workers to elevate the country to a middle-income status.
On the other hand, the JS body sought USAID’s cooperation to restore the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP).
