GWTUC wants withdrawal of case against leaders, workers

Garment Workers Trade Union Centre on Friday demanded withdrawal of a case filed against its leaders and Ashiana Garments Industries workers claiming that they were deliberately implicated in Wednesday’s clash. BGMEA officials filed a case with the Ramna police on Wednesday accusing 12 leaders of GWTUC and 150 workers of Ashiana following a clash between the workers and Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association employees at Karwan Bazar in Dhaka. At least 20 workers were injured in the incident. The trade union leaders from a protest rally held in front of the National Press Club also urged the Asiana Garments Industries Ltd owner to reopening the unit, said a press release. Unionists said they went to the BGMEA office to meet their employer, but the BGMEA employees attacked them with iron roads and sticks.GWTUC president Montu Ghosh, executive president Kazi Ruhul Amin, general secretary Jolly Talukder, organising secretary KM Mintu and other leaders were accused in the case in connection with reported vandalism and attack on the employees, said the release.Montu Ghosh said the BGMEA filed the case on false allegation with an intention to harass them.He also complained that police declined to record complaints against the BGMEA employees when the unionists went to the police station to lodge formal complaints.
