Accord case lingers at SC, next hearing Dec 17

The Supreme Court today extended the tenure of Accord, a European agency for factory inspection and remediation, till December 17.A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after today’s hearingAccord’s advocate on record SufiaKhatun prayed for more time with reason that her colleage AF Hassan Ariff could not place arguments today.She told the court Advocate Ariff, the lawyer for Accord, was expected to place argument before the apex court today;but he is physically ill.The apex court fixed December 17 for further hearing on the issue.Earlier on December 6, the SC extended the tenure of Accordtill December 10 (today) and also fixed the date for further hearing of an appeal filed bythe agency, Accord on Building and Fire Safety in Bangladesh.The appeal was filed challenging a High Court directive that asked Accord to stop its activities after November 30.The Accord conducts inspection and remediation activities for more than 200 global clothing retailers and brands.
