Commerce minister Tipu Munshi on Saturday launched digital mapping system of export-oriented readymade garment factories bringing a total of 961 factories located in the Dhaka district under the system. Brac University with lead funding from C&A Foundation and support from Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association is implementing the project.The commerce minister launched the digital mapping system at an event held at the BGMEA headquarters in the city.According to the data, out of 961 factories, 855 are registered with BGMEA and 144 are registered with BKMEA.Thirteen factories under the system are not members of any of the trade bodies.The initiative of digital mapping system was taken in 2017, and the map incorporating factories from across the country is expected to be completed by 2021, organisers said.Department of Inspections for Factories and Establishments inspector general Shamsuzzaman Bhuiyan, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry president Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, BGMEA president Md Siddiqur Rahman and BKMEA vice-president Mansoor Ahmed were present, among others, at the launching ceremony.
