Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) have sought the government’s support to mobilise a fund for the well being of the 4.4 million RMG workers in the upcoming budget. In a letter written by the BGMEA president Rubana Haq, a special fund was sought to Finance Minister AHNM Mostafa Kamal to allocate a fund in the budget so that the cost of necessities including housing, transport and healthcare of the RMG workers could be subsidized.“We believe every Taka spent in their well being will return significant and tangible value to our economy,” wrote Rubana.“Though I know that the budget for FY2019-20 have taken its shape already, a small fraction of it might still be re-provisioned recognizing its crucial bearing on our future economy,” she wrote. She also wrote that the wages of the RMG workers have gone up by 381 percent in the last nine years. “Yet how much of this benefit is actually reaching to our workers is a question we need to find answer to,” she said.
