Trade Promotion Council of India (TPCI) chairman Mohit Singla recently urged New Delhi to actively engage with the US Congress to resolve the withdrawal of the generalised system of preferences (GSP) as the Congress has the right to question the government’s unilateral and arbitrary orders and regulations and also help arrive at constructive solutions. The chief trade counsels of both the political parties in the United States are ready to play a constructive role to resolve the escalating US-India tariff war, he said. SIngla said the US decision is not making any economic sense for itself, as it is hurting the country’s industry more than that of India, a TPCI press release quoted Singla as saying. The US Trade Committee members of US House of Representatives in their statements have said that starting January this year, the Indian side has completely stopped communicating with the trade counsels in the US Congress. The members are baffled by why the Indian Government and the Indian Embassy have not been coordinating any trade agenda with the US Congress, and instead are dealing solely with the Office of the United State Trade Representative, added Singla.
