BGMEA President says support package extension will bring garment sector to next level

The apex garment makers’ body in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Garment Makers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has, reportedly, sought a fresh wage support for another 4 months starting January 2021, while also praising the Government for the earlier monetary support.

Appreciating the stimulus packages announced in March by the Government, BGMEA President Dr. Rubana Huq while speaking to a news daily, reportedly, said that without this (stimulus packages) majority of the factories might have faced closure while seeking the fresh wage support, underlining the new package with 2.0 per cent service charge should be given for a payback period of 5 years with a moratorium of 12 months, and also sought extension of the current package’s tenure to 5 years and that of the moratorium to up to 12 months, saying it would be of immense help to the sector.

The support will help the sector go to the next level, reportedly, maintained Dr. Rubana expressing hope the RMG sector of Bangladesh would be excelling by June.

She also explained the temporary support would also help the garment makers in value addition, product diversification, recycling and preparing for the 4th industrial revolution.

In the process, it would also help the workforce achieve better skills, the BGMEA President, reportedly, underlined while adding that there still remain many challenges for the industry as it steps into a new year, including that of mitigating losses caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the challenge of facing the post-pandemic situation.
