Bangladesh Government has, reportedly, decided to go ahead with the strict countrywide lockdown till 5 August with restrictions on businesses, industries in general and public movement — a decision in this regard was taken during a high-level meeting at the Cabinet Division held on 27 July — even as apprehensions are abound this might lead the garment industry to miss out on a turnaround opportunity.
Media reports maintained this adding that people in the industry underlined that even if Bangladesh continues to be in lockdown, its major export destinations have returned to normalcy and the businesses there are up and running. What’s more, there has been a surge in sales in those countries since their return to normalcy.
Given the existing scenario, garment makers are, reportedly, planning to appeal to the Government again to allow garment factories to operate in case the Government decides to extend the lockdown further after 5 August.
Already shipments are being delayed due to container congestion, and now closure of factories could lead to more complications, reportedly, maintained a garment maker while interacting with the media, adding this might result in losing many buyers as factories in competitor countries are open.
Meanwhile, speaking to the media, BGMEA Vice-President, reportedly, maintained they had hoped infection rate would reduce, but now the reverse is happening.
As all the factories are closed, we will abide by the decision of the Government, reportedly, stated the BGMEA Vice-President further.
