Garment workers in the port city of Chittagong are facing a hard time reaching their respective workplaces as public transport has come to a halt because of the lockdown in Bangladesh even as from 1 June the Government went into a limited lockdown — before going for ‘all out lockdown’ from 1 July — during which all modes of transport excepting rickshaws were banned for three days.
Media reports maintained this while adding that garment workers have alleged that factory owners did not make available any vehicles for them even though officers and management staff availed the same.
According to reports, finding no vehicles, at one point in time, some garment workers got agitated and blocked roads for an hour at the city’s Tiger pass area demanding resumption of public transport service before police intervened and provided them buses to drop them to their workplaces, to bring the situation under control even as reports suggest that the BGMEA has discussed on the transportation issue of workers as well as how to keep the factories running in compliance with the health protocols with the factory owners.
