At least 10 garment workers were injured in a clash with police after a demonstration demanding payment of arrears at Naljani in Gazipur turned violent on Tuesday afternoon, reports UNB. Officer-in-Charge of Joydebpur Police Station Rezaul Hasan said a group of workers of Kojima Lyric Garments Ltd brought out a rally in the morning and blocked Dhaka-Gazipur road demanding their salaries in arrears and Eid bonus. Upon being alerted to the trouble, a team of police reached the spot where the protesters swooped on the law enforcers, triggering the clash that saw 10 of the demonstrators receive injuries. Like most such clashes that are typical in the industrial belt at this time of year, it consisted of chases followed by counter-chases between the two sides, broken by occasional lulls to reenergize or reorganize, and sporadic gunfire by law enforcers. The aim at all times through all this is to break up the protesting group, thus signaling the end of their resistance. The maddening, merry-go-round scenario was enacted several times at Naljani today, the OC added, before police were forced to use teargas shells to achieve their aim of dispersing the demonstrators. After that the entire situation was gradually brought under control by the police.
