The Accord, an alliance of major buyers of the European Union (EU), reassured Bangladesh of buying apparels, but sought stricter security for foreign buyers, reports BSS. A delegation of the Accord reiterated the commitment as they met with Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan at his secretariat office in the city on Wednesday. Representatives of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) were with the delegation. At the meeting, the Accord representatives, led by its Executive Director Rob Wayss, conveyed the home minister that they were concerned at the recent terrorist activities, but not scared. They also said that their members would continue usual business with the Bangladeshi apparel exporters. Rob also sought security for the foreign buyers during their visit to Bangladesh and stay here. Responding to the request, the home minister assured the Accord that the government had already taken with utmost importance the issue of ensuring security, in particular to the foreign apparel buyers. Director General (DG) of Industrial Police Abdus Salam, who also attended the meeting, said the industrial police would provide all security support to the foreign buyers during the visit to the industrial area. He suggested the Accord representatives to inform industrial police in advance about the scheduled visit so the security personnel can provide necessary support. BGMEA president Md Siddikur Rahman also attended the meeting. Meanwhile, another report adds: terming Bangladesh’s progress in readymade garments (RMG) sector an instance for other countries, UNCTAD Secretary General Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi opined Bangladesh’s RMG sector would conquer top position in the world soon. The UNCTAD Secretary General expressed his observation during a view exchange meeting with Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu at Kenya International Convention Centre in Nairobi. Praising the progress of Bangladesh’s leather, plastic and pharmaceutical industries, Dr Mukhisa said Bangladesh’s achievement in these three sectors would be a role model for other countries. He told the industries minister that he would highlight the issue in the closing session of World Investment Forum to disseminate the information to the world business leaders. The Industries Minister said Bangladesh’s RMG is continuing its upward growth defying global economic meltdown due to government patronization and efficiency of the entrepreneurs. Amu invited the UNCTAD Secretary General to visit Bangladesh.
