Demand for declaring April 24 ‘Garments workers mourning day’

Garments Sramik Front on Friday demanded declaration April 24 as ‘Garments Workers Mounrning Day’, capital punishment to responsible owners over deaths of workers at workplace and appropriate compensation to deceased worker.The demands were made at human chain titled ‘Call of 6th anniversary of Rana Plaza Tragedy’ held in front of National Press Club. Speakers at the human said as many as 1,136 workers were killed in Rana Plaza tragedy on April 24, 2013. Over 300 workers went missing and around 2,500 received injuries. Those who are responsible for the incident, trial of them has not completed last six years.  Except Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza, no other accused are in jail. Many accused are in fugitive but no initiative is being taken to arrest them, speakers alleged.They said in case of Tazrin fire, Spectrum collapse, responsible dishonest officials for negligence to perform duties and profit greedy owners have not face justice. That is why many workers lost their lives at different garments factories like Tempako and Multifabs.The speakers said they think the government and owners would be careful on ensuring safety for workers at workplace if the affected workers are given compensation, and responsible persons punished. Garments Sramik Front president Ahsan Habib Bulbul, general secretary Selim Mahmud, among others, were present at the human chain programme, reports a Bangla online portal.
