After the situation escalated, the workers took to the streets and blocked the nearby Dhaka-Sylhet highway for two hours
Workers of an apparel factory were reportedly assaulted yesterday after protesting against overwork without pay at Rupganj in Narayanganj.
Sources said the factory management of Bay Creation Apparels, located at Karnagop area of Rupganj upazila, announced that the 1,200 workers of the factory would each have to complete 150 extra hours outside of their usual schedule without any pay.
Workers protested against this decision, after which they were ambushed and assaulted by outsiders whom they suspected to be miscreants hired by the management, they alleged.
After the situation escalated, the workers took to the streets and blocked the nearby Dhaka-Sylhet highway for two hours, blocking traffic during the period.
Police later deployed forces from Kachpur Industrial Police and Rupganj Police Station to defuse the situation and pacify the workers.
Alamgir Hossain, sub-inspector of Kachpur Industrial Police, told Dhaka Tribune that they negotiated with the factory management on behalf of the workers, who promised to withdraw the new notice.
