Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has asked the deputy commissioners (DCs) to identify one potential product from their respective districts for expanding the country’s export basket. The minister came up with the directive at a meeting with the DCs on the second day of a 3-day DC Conference 2015 held atthe secretariat in city yesterday. “We’ve emphasised on the increase of export volume as well as products diversification,”Tofail Ahmed told the reporters after the meeting. On the basis of one district, one product, the DCs were directed to identify at least one exportable product to the export basket, said Ahmed. He said, “Rules of Formalin Control Act 2013 will be formulated soon, so the DCs will be able to play more effective role in controlling the use of formalin in fruits and fishes.” “We’ve also formed Consumers Rights Protection Committees in districts and upazilalevel with the help of the DCs to ensure supply of contamination free products,” said Tofail. Industry Minister Amir Hossain Amu said: “During the meeting, the DCs have also sought government direction for allocating plots properly to the entrepreneurs that are remain unused in several districts.” “It is still under government consideration and an initiatives would be taken soon to allocate those plots,” said Amir Hossain while responding to the plea. “Initiatives will also be taken to reduce the prices of jute sack-bag to encourage its usage while tax will be imposed on poly-woven bags to discourage it,” said the industry minister.
