The government will provide about Tk21.65 crore among 3,428 workers, employed in the export-oriented garment industries from the central fund formed under the ministry of labour and employment for their welfare.
The assistance was approved in the 18th board meeting of the central fund held on Tuesday in the conference room of the labour ministry chaired by State Minister Munnujan Sufian.
According to Bangladesh Labour Act, 0.03% of the value of exported goods is directly deposited in the central fund through Bangladesh Bank.
Among those entitled for assistance, 495 workers of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and 241 workers of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) will get Tk14.67 crore assistance for death and permanent disability due to accidents, while 2040 workers of BGMEA and BKMEA will be given Tk5.68 crore as medical assistance. Besides, Tk1.30 crore will be given as educational assistance to 652 meritorious children of the workers.
