Situation in Ashulia returns to normal as most RMG factories reopen

The situation in Ashulia Industrial Zone has started to return to normal since yesterday (25 September) after RMG owners agreed to accept the 18 demands of the workers through a meeting between the owners, the workers and the government.

Most factories in Ashulia reopened today (26 September) and workers joined work spontaneously.

Contacted, Superintendent of Industrial Police-1 Md Sarowar Alam said, “Since the morning, we have seen that workers have joined work as usual and no untoward incident has been reported anywhere.”

However, 17 factories in Ashulia still remained closed, including three non-RMG factories. Among these factories, general holiday has been declared at eight and the other nine are closed following Section 13 )1) of Bangladesh Labour Act which stipulated no work no pay.

“Some factories are closed due to unpaid wages and internal issues. There is an unpaid wages issue in at least eight factories. We are trying to resume operations at the factories by discussing the issue with BGMEA and the owners,” Sarowar added.

Labour leaders and industrial police hoped that the situation will remain normal and the industry will get back to its usual pace soon.
