Khadi fabric receives GI recognition, boosting local heritage and industry

Comilla’s traditional Khadi fabric has officially been recognized as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, and marks a significant milestone in preserving and promoting the region’s cultural heritage.

The GI certificate was formally awarded on 30 April at an event organized by the Ministry of Industries at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.

This recognition follows last year’s inclusion of Comilla’s renowned roshmalai on the GI list.

With two of the region’s iconic products—roshmalai and Khadi—now officially recognized. Local people remain hopeful that Bijoypur’s traditional pottery, the third of Comilla’s cultural “brands,” will soon join them.

The Khadi industry in Comilla has a long and proud history, dating back to 1921 during the non-cooperation movement in the Indian subcontinent.

Responding to Mahatma Gandhi’s call for self-reliance and the boycott of foreign goods, locals embraced Khadi, spun on charkas placed in pits—hence the name “Khadi.” Gandhi himself visited Comilla to inspire the community by spinning Khadi.

Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan, founder of the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD), later played a key role in institutionalizing support for the Khadi industry.

Though such support declined over time, dedicated entrepreneurs have sustained the craft, blending traditional artistry with modern designs.

Today, Comilla is home to over 300 Khadi clothing shops stretching from Ramghat in Kandirpar to Rajganj, reflecting the enduring appeal of this handcrafted fabric.

Pradeep Raha Kanti, owner of Comilla Khadi Ghar and one of the region’s oldest Khadi traders, expressed optimism about the industry’s future. “This recognition brings new hope. Khadi has survived through immense challenges. With state support, it can now achieve commercial success both locally and internationally,” he said.

The GI status not only acknowledges Comilla Khadi’s historical and cultural value but is also expected to open new avenues for economic growth, branding, and global recognition.
