A devastating fire broke out at a sweater factory in the Malekerbari area of Gazipur city on Tuesday morning leaving at least four workers and several other fire fighting personnel injured. The cause of the fire could not be known immediately. Assistant deputy director of Gazipur fire service Akteruzzaman Liton said the fire had originated at around 7.30 am on Tuesday in a godown on the 7th floor of Matrix Sweater Limited, an eight-storied building in the area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway. The fire spread throughout the whole floor immediately after the incident and burnt a large volume of readymade garments to ashes just. The garments were stored for shipment to buyers. On information, three fire service units from the Joydebpur fire station in Gazipur rushed to the spot and started fighting the fire. Later, 21 more units from Tongi, Kaliganj, Bhaluka of Mymensingh, Savar, Dhaka EPZ and Dhaka fire service joined them and doused the fire at around 1.30 after six hours of frantic efforts. Fire service sources said four workers of the factory and some fire-fighting personnel were injured in the incident. They were sent to the factory clinic for treatment. There was no worker inside the factory during the fire incident as it happened before the start of the morning shift. On information, director of fire service (operation) Major A.K.M. Shakil Newaj went to the spot. He said the cause of the fire incident and the extent of losses could not be known immediately. It would be known after investigation.
