The workers of an apparel factory yesterday morning took to the streets and demonstrate demanding payment of due salaries and allowances in front of the factory. About 70 apparel workers of Mashuda Fabrics Private Ltd, located in Anderkilla area of the port city, demonstrated for salaries of May month and salaries and allowances of June month ahead of Eid, said Arifur Rahman, Inspector (Intelligence) of Chittagong industrial police. “Industrial police have taken the situation under control and now the workers are staying inside the factory as officials of Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, representatives of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association and police personnel were trying to pay their salaries and allowances, contacting with the owner of the factory Kamal Uddin, who fled”, said the inspector. The apparel workers also confined the Production Manager of factory ‘Sukumer’ in the factory on Sunday night with the same demand. Later police relieved him, Arifur added. It may be mentioned that leaders of Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association at a meeting with the State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque on July 2 said the factory authorities would pay workers wages within July 10 and festival allowances by July 14 before Eid-ul-Fitr.
