Textiles and Jute Minister M Emaz Uddin Pramanik Wednesday said the government would begin handloom census soon across the country, reports BSS. “The government would begin handloom census in the country, because no handloom census was conducted after 2003,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion at Handloom Board in the city. The minister said the government would also undertake a handloom related project in Chittagong Hill Tracts area, adding, “We have taken initiatives for improving the handloom sector.” Pramanik said the government is committed to provide all out support for improving socioeconomic condition of the weavers. State Minister Mirza Azam and secretary of the ministry Farid Uddin Ahmad Chowdhury were present as special guests in the meeting. The minister said the government under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would undertake initiatives to develop the socio-economic condition of country’s weavers and make them self-reliant. He discussed the activities of Bangladesh Handloom Board during the meeting and said, “The government is hopeful to overcome existing problems of the weavers.” During the meeting State Minister Mirza Azam said the government would take necessary steps to reopen 2.0 lakh handlooms out of 5.0 lakh in the country. Azam said the government is working to implement a plan for establishing a handloom palli outside the capital city.
