Taiwanese firm to develop garment capacity in Vietnam

Taiwan based knitwear fabric and apparel manufacturer Eclat Textile will invest $50.5 million to expand garment production capacity at its two existing units in Vietnam, according to media reports. The company, which manufactures for clients like Nike, Adidas, Calvin Klein and Under Armour is making investment to benefit from the recently concluded 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement, of which Vietnam is a member. Eclat will invest $40 million in its existing unit in Vietnam’s Ba Ria-Vung Tau province and another $10.5 million in its factory in Dong Nai province. This investment is aimed at increasing garment production capacity to over 5 million pieces per month. The actual content of the TPP is yet to be announced, but it is widely expected that apparel exports from Vietnam will get zero-duty access to the US and Japanese markets.
