US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Bernicat on Sunday said the United States government is active to resolve the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) issue with Bangladesh. “There is a notion among many (people) that the US government has curtailed the GSP facilities for political reason…the matter is not political at all. The US government gives such facilities through a law,” she said, adding the US government remains active to solve the issue. Ms Bernicat’s comments came when she called on State Minister for Women and Children Meher Afroz Chumki at the latter’s secretariat office in the city, an official release said. The state minister called upon the US government to restore GSP facilities and said the female garment workers are the main victims of the GSP cancellation. Highly praising Bangladesh’s astonishing development in last 44 years since independence, Ms Bernicat thanked the state minister for extending support of her ministry to various projects being implemented by the USAID. Chumki thanked the US ambassador for the US interest in Bangladesh’s women development.
