‘Minimum wages for RMG workers to be announced before polls’

The State Minister said this while addressing a function at a city convention hall, a handout said.Manusher Jonno Foundation with support from Terre des Hommes (TDH Italy) arranged the discussion to disseminate the findings of a survey on conditions and rights of the RMG workers in Bangladesh. Associate Professor of the Department of Anthropology at Jahangirnagar University Dr Mahmudul H Sumon carried out the survey.Mujibul said it will take time to ensure the living wage for the RMG workers as the economic capability of the country is increasing day by day.”The RMG industry will surely come to a living wage level one day,” he said, urging the brand-buyer organisations to take steps for raising the price of the RMG products.The survey, which was conducted on 770 RMG workers in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj and Chittagong, revealed that around 72 percent workers in Dhaka and Gazipur and about 76.60 percent in Narayanganj and Chittagong are aware of their maternal leave and related facilities.The participants at the function urged all to come forward towards ensuring regular salaries and wages, maternal leave and related facilities, and stopping sexual abuse against the female workers.Moderated by executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation Shahin Anam, the function was addressed, among others, by Terre des Hommes representative Silvia Rozelly, Minimum Wage Board member on RMG affairs Shamsunnahar Bhuiyan and executive director of BILS Syed Sultan Uddin Ahmed.
