Kenya – Nairobi shoe factory to boost youth employment

A new leather product manufacturing facility is to be opened in Nairobi in July. The facility, which will make shoes, belts and handbags, is located in the Kariokor district of the Kenyan capital. The building of this factory is part of the government’s economic plan to transform Kenya into a middle-income country. This strategy is referred to as Vision 2030.  Nairobi city governor Mike Sonko, who will attend its official opening, has said: “This will go a long way in production of good quality shoes that meet international standards. The facility is expected to have an average annual production growth from the current two million shoes to 10 million shoes.” A local trade official has said the factory will provide job opportunities for young people in Nairobi, suggesting employment could increase from 1,000 to 10,000 people within three years thanks to direct and indirect positions being created.
