Jute mill workers get wages, bonus

Workers of nine state-owned jute mills in Jashore and Khulna received their outstanding wages and Eid bonus on Thursday. But the mill officials are yet to get theirs, reports UNB. Workers of crescent, platinum and star jute mills withdrew their wages from ATM booths in Khalishpur in the afternoon. On the other hand, officials of these mills were not paid their arrears. Kalam Mollik, general secretary of Jute mill industrial officers association, said: “We didn’t receive any salary this year. Although the Finance Ministry paid the workers’ arrears, mill officials were not paid any wages.” Meanwhile, hundreds of officials demonstrated in front of Khulna zone office. In a press conference, they demanded payment of their dues before Sunday. They said that the Prime Minister ordered to allocate TK 2.33 billion for jute mill workers and officials. But only TK 1.69 billion was allocated. Meanwhile, about 40 per cent workers are yet to withdraw money as ATM booths ran out of cash, prompting many workers to demonstrate in front of SIBL’s Khulna Sadar branch.
