Nigeria’s Funtua mill expansion to revive cotton farming

Farmers in the Funtua area of Nigeria’s Katsina state are happy over a joint plan by the state and central governments to convert the Funtua textile mill into an integrated textile and garment park (ITGP). The state last week announced its commitment to partner with the federal ministry of industry, trade and investment to convert the mill into an ITGP. The announcement came at a meeting between Katsina state deputy governor Alhaji Mannir Yakubu and officials of the federal ministry of industry, trade and investment, according to senior special assistant to the deputy governor on press affairs Ibrahim Musa. The state government has provided land for the project and it has committed to providing more land if required. But rice, soybeans, sorghum and maize were the crops that reportedly dominated farmlands in the Funtua zone with only a few farming cotton.
