We’ve paid 65% salary, many have also given bonus: BKMEA president

To keep the wheel of the economy turning during the Covid-19 crisis, export activities should be kept normal.

The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) President and also Member of Parliament (MP) from Narayanganj five constituency AKM Salim Osman said this on Friday.

“We are seeing signs of hope. Italy is lifting lockdown and reopening all businesses. Germany is placing orders to the apparel sector.”

“Many garments have works orders while others do not. In this situation, the apparel factories might open a day after Eid.”

Salim Osman MP made the remarks while speaking to reporters at the BKMEA headquarters, situated at the second floor of the Narayanganj Press Club Building.

He said the workers were paid 50 percent of their salary in many countries outside Bangladesh. “But we have given 65 percent of salary and many have also given bonus.”

“The government has stood by our side. The Sundarbans has saved us from ‘Amphan.’ Disasters will come but we have to be careful. It is the responsibility of journalists to warn us,” Salim Osman said.

He also said that the journalists and law enforcers have been most affected by Covid-19 while carrying out duties.

“Building Nasim Osman Bridge on Shitalakshya River, turning Khanpur Hospital into a medical college, setting up a Knit Palli (knit village) at Shantirchar have remained stalled even after getting permission. This is because there is no discussion about these. You have to highlight these issues through your writing. You journalists should unite,” Salim Osman continued.

Narayanganj Chamber President Khaled Haider Khan Kajal, the BKMEA Vice President (Finance) Rashed Sarwar Sohail and many others were present also at the programme.
