GTUC protests at police attack on garment workers

Garments trade union activists on Sunday staged demonstration in front of the Narayanganj Press Club in Narayanganj to protest at Saturday’s police attack on Kuntong Fashion City Apparels’ workers at Siddhirganj in Narayanganj. The activists under the banner of the Narayanganj district unit of Garments Trade Union Centre staged the demonstration forming a human chain. They also demanded the payment of all dues to Kuntong Fashion City Apparels’ workers and the reopening of the factory at Adamji Export Processing Zone at Siddhirganj. Speakers at the event said that authorities, in August 2020, closed the factory on the pretext of announcing a two-day holiday without paying any dues to the workers. The factory workers had demonstrated several times to press home their demands as the apparel factory authorities did not pay despite making assurance for several times. They alleged that the police swooped on their peaceful demonstration in front of their factory, injuring at 20 workers. Presided over by the trade union’s district president MA Shahin, the programme was addressed, among others, by its central leader Dulal Saha, district general secretary Iqbal Hossain and Sramik Jagaran Mancha general secretary Jahangir Alam Golok.
