Even as the 14-day strict countrywide lockdown imposed by the Bangladesh Government in view of the COVID-19 situation from 23 July continues, garment makers have expressed apprehensions global buyers may cancel their work orders if export orders are not delivered on time.
Media reports claimed this while adding the BGMEA, which is the apex garment makers body in the country, in a virtual meeting held on 25 July (Sunday) again reiterated that garment manufacturing units be allowed to operate during the lockdown.
A press release issued by the Chittagong regional office of the garment makers’ body, reportedly, underlined that the BGMEA has urged the Prime Minister to allow apparel units to run so as to avoid any possible disaster even as the said meeting of the BGMEA was, reportedly, attended by BGMEA First Vice-President Syed Nazrul Islam, Vice-President Rakibul Alam Chowdhury, Directors Md. M Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Tanvir Habib, Shafiul Karim (Khokon), M. Abdus Salam, amongst others.
Speaking at the meeting, Syed Nazrul Islam, reportedly, stated if factories remain off till 5 August, garment makers will fail to deliver consignments on time, which might lead the buyers to cancel orders from Bangladesh.
