The export of the readymade garments (RMG) has increased as the container crisis eased significantly in Chittagong port.
In the period of July-September 2021, some $9.05 billion came from clothing exports which saw 11.48 per cent year-on-year growth. Some $5.16 billion came from knitwear shipment, which registered a 15.69 per cent year-on-year growth.
Exports from Bangladesh faced unexpected delays for a couple of months owing to the global container crisis. Recently, the crisis has largely been lessened which helped increase the export proceeds in September, according to the trade body.
“Our export has increased because of the momentum of Chittagong port and the export will continuously increase. In the three months, July to September we made 11.50 percent of growth, I hope it will increase more in the next month” “Shahidullah Azim, Senior Vice President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) told the Business Insider Bangladesh on Monday.
“Though the container problem has diminished notably, the crisis will continue until 2022 to ’23. Our export growth has rebound after withdrawal of lockdown, so we are trying to serve the customer as much as possible” Md Ruhul Amin Sikder, Secretary, Bangladesh Inland Container Depots Association (BICDA) told the Business Insider Bangladesh on Monday.
Moreover, the country did experience a positive growth of garment export in July-August that was 11.56 percent.
However, woven export also recorded a positive growth after nearly one and a half years with the reopening of the economies in the western world.
Woven garments earned $3.89 billion in the three months to September this year, a 6.35 per cent year-on-year rise, according to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB).
Earnings from home textile posted a positive growth of 10.65 percent and leather and leather goods over 20 percent, as per EPB.
“Those work orders, which were poured in the country after a long lockdown, started to ship. And, demand for apparels shot up also. So, monthly production and export are going up,” said Proprietor of AAA TRIMS WORLD, Zainul Abedin.
Besides, during the lockdown, the buyers have exhausted their stock by online selling. Hunger has been created globally. October will see higher shipment of apparels. further, he said.
The shipment of the orders received till now will start from October, and then the export will increase more in October through December, he said.
