Leather goods makers launch school for workers’ children

Leather Goods and Footwear Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB) yesterday inaugurated a community primary school for its workers’ children in Ashulia, outside the capital.Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu was present as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the tin-shed one-storied LFMEAB Community School built on Picard Community School premises at Kathgora. Saiful Islam, president of LFMEAB, presided over the programme.This is the first community school built for the children of leather goods workers in Ashulia.Under a programme named ”Beyond Compliance”, the association yesterday also distributed health and medical cards among some 2,000 workers of its two member factories, Picard Bangladesh Ltd, and Leatherex Footwear industries Ltd.A total of 22,000 out of some 40,000 workers were given medical cards in last four month till July 20, said Saiful.With the cards, the workers will be able to avail themselves of free treatment at some 200 health facilities across the country.The association also insured the lives of all the workers of its 153 member factories under the progamme.Inu said such initiatives are appreciable and are needed to ensure better social and health protection as well as welfare of workers.LFMEAB, founded in 2003, is set to establish two more such schools soon.
