Trade Union Centre brings out a procession

Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre brings out a procession in the capital on Friday and organise of human chain in the city on Friday demanding amendment to labour law and wage hike.

Following the industrial tragedies of Rana Plaza and Tazreen, workers seeking to improve working conditions in their factories by forming trade unions began to see progress. A number of unions got registration and this helped the garment industries to regain image in the international arena. However, the recent intentional rejections of union registration and questionable practices of government officials represent severe freedom of association and rights violations. The Garment Federation of Workers Solidarity and others will present evidence of irregularities and other concerns with the registration process.

Garment Workers, Union Leaders to Call for Fairness and Accountability in Government Union Registration Process. Garment workers from the Dhaka Dyeing factory in Maghbazar, Dhaka, leaders from the Garment Federation of Workers Solidarity and other trade union federations will hold a march followed by a press conference to demand transparency, accountability and fairness by the Joint Director of Labour, the government body responsible for registering trade unions. Widespread irregularities have been extensively documented in the case of Dhaka Dyeing, which have also been consistently experienced by other garment workers seeking to have their trade unions registered across the sector and have had their applications unfairly rejected. Expeditiously registering unions that meet requirements and protecting unions from antiunion discrimination are key components of the US action plan required for GSP restoration.
